Complete Stats

Heartbreaking loss for Calgary Flames fans. With yet another bad 20 minutes to start, the Flames found themselves trailing by two after the first.

An awful give-away by Lucic — who thought he was passing to Giordano — landed on Appleton’s stick who got the assist on Trevor Lewis’ goal making it 1-0 Jets.

30 seconds later Derek Forbort would find the back of the Flames net — with David Rittich out of position — making it 2-0 Jets.

It would take the Flames 35 seconds to cut the Jets lead down to one. Lindholm carrying the puck in, pass to Dube, who gets the puck to the net for the Flames first goal of the game off of Tkachuk.

Flames’ goaltender Rittich would get beat on a puck deflection by Nikolaj Ehlers, Jets regaining their two goal lead on the Flames before the end of the first.

There would be no goals in the second period. Winnipeg outshooting Calgary 12-6.

Calgary would balance out the shots 17-5 in the third period — 3 of the Jets shots were in the first 5 minutes of the 3rd.

Tkachuk would score his second goal of the game, putting the Flames within one again. A wild sequence, Tkachuk with a break-away — shot, rebound shovelled up by Johnny Gaudreau — hitting the crossbar, only for Tkachuk to swipe it in behind Jets’ goaltender Laurent Brossoit.

The Calgary Flames rallied at the end, calling a time out before pulling Rittich for the empty-net extra attacker with 1:43 left to play. With a couple of icing calls and good looks by the Flames, it looked like this game was bound to go into extra time like the last two games against Winnipeg.

This game would however end, 3-2 loss for the Flames — Forbort blocking shots for Brossoit, who had a 29-save game win for the Jets.

Final Thoughts

The Jets did their damage early on, and the Flames couldn’t recover.

Rasmus Andersson had a scary moment in the game — taking a skate to his visor. He was fine and back on the ice thankfully, and I thought he had a good game tonight — with a couple of good chances, and solid at the blue line, keeping the puck in the attack zone as Flames fans held their breath hoping for the Flames tying goal .. *SIGH*

Flame of the Game

Matthew Tkachuk (F): Tkachuk had fire in his eyes. After a scrum in front of the Flames net he was handed a roughing penalty, but his boisterous play may have added a spark to the Flames energy level, as they came out hard hitting in the third period.
