As offseason vacations near their end, the Calgary Flames players made the most of their time this weekend.

Although Labour Day is celebrated in May in Sweden, Flames goaltender Jacob Markstrom used the North American Labour Day long weekend to announce the life-changing news that his partner Amanda Östervall is pregnant. And it’s a boy.

Markstrom took to social media to publicly declare he’s going to be a parent. The 32-year-old who’s notorious for napping and sound sleeps had some words for his future son.

“Hi son, I hope you get the beauty from your mother and the ability to sleep from your father. We are so happy and can’t wait for your arrival,” Markstrom wrote in his Instagram post.

That personal news might be the only thing that could top an incredible professional season this year. Markstrom was runner up to New York Rangers goaltender Igor Shesterkin in the Vezina Trophy voting for top goaltender last season. He helped the Calgary Flames to a franchise record 50-21-11 record to lock up the Pacific Division.

He’ll be motivated to bounce back from a disappointing second-round performance in the playoffs, too. Dropping the Battle of Alberta to the Edmonton Oilers in five games left a bad taste in the mouths of the entire team.

Markstrom recently addressed the team’s off-season moves and thinks the team will be improved this year.

Calgary Flames teammate Andrew Mangiapane also made a big announcement on Labour Day weekend, popping the question to now-fiancée Claudia Tersigni.

“Future Mrs. 88,” Mangiapane wrote in his Instagram post, which captured him on one knee on a boat in Lake Ontario showing a scenic Toronto backdrop of the CN Tower and Rogers Centre.

The 26-year-old has capped off a pretty incredible summer.

Following a career 35-goal, 55-point campaign, Mangiapane signed a new three-year, $17.4-million deal with the Calgary Flames. He’s expected to play alongside either new centre Nazem Kadri or Selke finalist Elias Lindholm this season.

Former Flames teammate Matthew Tkachuk was among the many who offered their congratulations in the comments.
