Daily Scan: Huberdeau Signs Tkachuk Card, Bruins Make Big Moves

Jonathan Huberdeau has been in the news a lot following his trade to the Calgary Flames. He signed a massive long-term deal that could keep him in Calgary longer than Matthew Tkachuk is in Florida (he signed an eight-year deal as well but it starts this season). The two will be linked in NHL lore forever. And now a (suspected) Calgary Flames fan has a sports card that pairs the two. Meanwhile, Patrice Bergeron and David Krejci signed team-friendly deals with the Boston Bruins. Sort of the opposite of Johnny Gaudreau and Tkachuk this summer.

The Huberdeau video is funny. He’s clearly a player who cares about interacting with fans and showed he’s a good sport when he was approached by hordes of hockey fans in Montreal and stopped to sign some gear. One fan tossed a Tkachuk hockey card in front of the new Calgary Flames star. Huberdeau paused for a split second, laughed it off with a “Tkachuk” and autographed it.

It’s the ultimate troll job. Brave of the fan to put it in front of him. Good on Huberdeau for playing along.

 

Unlike the Calgary Flames inking Huberdeau to the largest contract in franchise history, the  Boston Bruins did not need to open the wallet too wide to get two impact players to sign on the dotted line.  David Krejci and Patrice Bergeron are reuniting wit the Bruins — will it pay off?

Meanwhile, the Colorado Avalanche are likely shying away from paying Nazem Kadri because they know they’ll have to shed some cap space on the NHL trade market to back up the Brinks truck for Nathan MacKinnon. The Avs superstar has been one of the best bang-for-buck contracts for years but Adrian Dater of Colorado Hockey Now has the scoop on MacKinnon looking to become the NHL’s highest-paid player next season. Team choices for captaincies don’t often align with the fanbases of other franchises. That’s definitely the case with the New York Rangers announcement. Big news broke Monday night that New York named Jacob Trouba as the franchise’s 28th captain. The Rangers had gone years without a captain following Ryan McDonagh’s departure in 2018. Last season, New York ran with six alternates: Trouba, Mika Zibanejad, Artemi Panarin, Ryan Strome, Chris Kreider and Barclay Goodrow. The Calgary Flames have gone one season without a captain since Mark Giordano was taken by the Seattle Kraken in the expansion draft. 

The Rangers posted a video on their Twitter of his fellow teammates offering congrats, and Panarin’s tribute and response was hilarious.

“Congratulations, buddy. Happy for you, but I still think I’m better choice,” he joked in the video.
