Red-hot Gaudreau NHL’s second star of the week

Spoiler alert: Today is going to be Johnny Gaudreau heavy on content. For good reason, too. The Calgary Flames winger is making a lot of noise, on and off the ice.

For his impressive 10-point effort last week, the NHL rewarded Gaudreau with second star of the week honours.

The Calgary Flames superstar piled up a pair of goals and eight assists in three games last week. The highlight was Gaudreau’s first career five-assist effort in a massive Battle of Alberta victory on Saturday.

The Hockey Night in Canada tilt ended with a 9-5 Calgary Flames win. The NHL’s third star of the week, Leon Draisaitl, had a hat-trick in that contest but still got stuck in Gaudreau’s shadow on the night.

With 90 points in 65 games, Gaudreau is on pace to crack the 100-point mark for the first time in his career. He’s just six goals shy of his career best, and three paltry assist short of his best season in that department, too.

Oh, and he’s a staggering plus-49 on the season, which shows how much damage he’s doing at even strength. By comparison, Draisaitl’s impressive three-goal, four-point game against the Calgary Flames came with a minus-four rating.

Gaudreau collected multiple points in all three of his outings last week. He had a goal and assist in a loss to the San Jose Sharks, added another goal and pair of helpers in a win over the Arizona Coyotes, then dominated against the Oilers. His 30th goal was also the 200th of his NHL career. It also happened to be his 40th game-winner.

The Calgary Flames’ flashiest forward has been named one of the league’s weekly star three times this season. He was first star for the week of Nov. 22 and the third star for the week of Jan. 31.

You get the feeling this won’t be the last, either.
