Flames Daily: Huberdeau’s Happiness, Gaudreau Getting Boos

Published

on

The Calgary Flames are in Florida, where Jonathan Huberdeau could give his new teammates tours. They start in Tampa with a date against the Lightning on Thursday. Then comes the date no doubt circled in Huberdeau’s calendar. Matthew Tkachuk probably has some sharpie around Saturday’s early game, too. Meanwhile, John Tortorella got kicked by a horse and Johnny Gaudreau can’t figure out why he’s hearing boos in New York.

That and more in today’s CHN Daily links.

Calgary Flames

Huberdeau has had a slow start this season but a couple of goals and seven points in a dozen games is pretty good for a slow start. That said, Calgary Flames coach Darryl Sutter has certainly made an impression with some of his public-facing motivational words. From the poop incident to the regular quips about it being the time for action, people are wondering what’s up with Huberdeau and his head coach.

I don’t think it’s anything that will cause long-term problems. Huberdeau has been pretty good in his last couple of games (1-1-2 with a plus-3 rating) and Sutter will find someone else to motivate.

The Flames offence exploded in a 6-5 win over the Los Angeles Kings this week. Adam Ruzicka is looking good on that left flank beside Elias Lindholm, vacated by Huberdeau while he was injured.

National Hockey Now

NYI Hockey Now: Misguided New York Islanders fans booed Columbus Blue Jackets winger Johnny Gaudreau on Saturday leaving the former Calgary Flames star wondering why. Are we sure Flames fans weren’t snuck into the building?

Philly Hockey Now: Philadelphia Flyers head coach John Tortorella was sporting a nice bruise on his cheek Tuesday night and it wasn’t from an errant puck. He also didn’t hold back during another loss, 5-4 in overtime to the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Florida Hockey Now: The Florida Panthers took care of business against Laviolette and the struggling Capitals. Jonathan Huberdeau and the Calgary Flames come calling on Saturday.

Dallas Hockey Now: The Dallas Stars stole a point in a 5-4 overtime loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday night.

San Jose Hockey Now: Could arguably the best defenceman in the NHL right now, San Jose Sharks blueliner Erik Karlsson, hit the NHL trade market soon?

Montreal Hockey Now: Mike Hoffman is heating up after an achingly slow start to the season. In more ways than one, including increased value on the NHL trade block, that helps the Montreal Canadiens.

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Playing in his first game in Pittsburgh since the Penguins traded him to the Ottawa Senators in the 2020 offseason, Toronto Maple Leafs goalie Matt Murray stopped 35 of 37 shots for a 5-2 Leafs win.

Washington Hockey Now: Some old teams are struggling. Pittsburgh and St. Louis are sputtering. And Tuesday night, yet again, the Washington Capitals stunk.

Jeff Marek Show: Marek suggests that the Toronto Maple Leafs grab defenceman John Klingberg from Anaheim. The info comes from the NHL Watcher Twitter account. That would be a hell of an addition.

Sportsnet: The hockey world, especially in Toronto, is still gobsmacked by the moment many of us witnessed Friday night. I don’t know if Pittsburgh TV captured it, but the outpouring of love and support (on the ice and in the stands) for Borje Salming was incredible. Just a moment I won’t forget. Even writing about it, my “allergies” kick up. The latest 32 Thoughts.
