Back to our regularly scheduled programming. The first of four (!) goaltenders to make this list, is right-catching Daniil Chechelev. After spending one more season in the Russian junior leagues after being taken in the fourth round of the 2020 NHL draft, Chechelev was brought over to North America for the 2021-22 season. With Dustin Wolf and Adam Werner firmly in the AHL seats, Chechelev spent the majority of the season with the Kansas City Mavericks of the ECHL. Finishing second last in the Western Mountain Division, Chechelev backstopped a team that struggled greatly to score.

His own personal numbers reflect a decent goaltender behind a poor team, with a fairly high goals against average, but a save percentage that reflects a goaltender facing a high-number of shots per goal, as it neared 90%.

The second season will be much more telling for the young goaltender who will now have had a season of North American hockey under his belt, including one AHL appearance. He won’t be with Kansas City however, as the Mavericks are now affiliated to the Seattle Kraken. He will likely be an ECHL-only goaltender this year, wherever the Flames figure out where that will be, while Dustin Wolf and Oscar Dansk take the Wranglers’ net.
