Flames Sign Jonathan Huberdeau to 8-Year, 10.5 Million AAV Contract

No stress this time!

Well it wasn’t the John any of us expected to sign an 8-year, $84 million dollar contract, but the exact deal reportedly turned down by Gaudreau was signed by Jonathan Huberdeau on Thursday night.

Huberdeau matched Gaudreau with 115 points this past season, as the two 2011 draft picks tied for second in the NHL. The Quebec native has 613 points in 671 career games, and won the Calder trophy during the shortened 2012-13 NHL season. He set an NHL record for assists by a left wing in 2021-22 with 85. He has 21 points in 26 career playoff games, including 5 points in 10 games this past spring.

It’s the latest in a string of signings for Brad Treliving, who locked up RFA’s Oliver Kylington and Andrew Mangiapane earlier this week. With Huberdeau on the last year of his 5.9 million dollar contract, this deal kicks in for the 2023-24 season and won’t require any cap reshuffling this season. Sean Monahan and Milan Lucic will come off the books for a combined 11.625 million dollars next summer. MacKenzie Weegar and Trevor Lewis are the other two other UFA’s after 2022-23.
