Gaudreau scores twice to pace Flames to win over Blackhawks

Johnny Gaudreau scored twice while Blake Coleman and Oliver Kylington each had a goal and an assist to lead the Calgary Flames to a 5-2 win Monday over the Chicago Blackhawks.

Flames forward Dillon Dube opened the scoring 22 seconds into the game when he deflected Noah Hanifin’s point shot past Blackhawks goalie Kevin Lankinen. It was Dube’s fourth goal in the last three games.

Gaudreau scored his first goal of the game at 6:23, circling all five Blackhawks skaters in the process for a highlight-worthy clip, to put the visitors up 2-0 before Tyler Johnson replied to put Chicago on the board less than a minute later.

Coleman’s goal came at 14:41 of the first on a tip-in. He redirected Kylington’s shot past Lankinen to make the score 3-1 Flames.

Alex Regula, with his first NHL career marker, scored Chicago’s other goal midway through the second period. The score remained 3-2 until the final two minutes of the game, when Gaudreau and Kylington both scored empty-net goals to ice the Calgary victory.

NHL scoring leaders chart April 18, 2022

  • Flames goalie Jacob Markstrom, who recorded an assist on Kylington’s goal,  stopped 22 of 24 shots while Blackhawks counterpart Lankinen turned away 30.
  • Gaudreau’s goals were his 600th and 601st career NHL points. He’s the fifth player to reach the 600-point plateau with the Flames, joining Jarome Iginla, Joe Nieuwendyk, Al MacInnis and Theoren Fleury.
  • Matthew Tkachuk’s assists on Gaudreau’s goals give him 98 points on the season, a total that ties his father Keith’s career-high with the Winnipeg Jets in 1995-96 (50G 48A).
  • With Monday’s win, the Flames (47-20-9) sit nine points ahead of the second-place Edmonton Oilers (44-26-6) for the Pacific Division lead. Each club has six games left on its regular-season schedule.
  • Up next: A date Tuesday night in Nashville against the Predators, a potential Flames’ first-round playoff foe.
