The Daily Scan: Big moves to come in Vegas, Leafs shopping defencemen

Calgary Flames Jack Eichel Vegas Golden Knights NHL trade

The Jack Eichel saga may be over and the Calgary Flames fell short, but the trickledown effect is coming. One day after the Vegas Golden Knights won the NHL trade sweepstakes for Eichel, we turn the page to look at the salary cap reality. In short, Vegas has more blockbuster trades to make unless they can ‘Kucherov’ Eichel. Matthew Tkachuk saw his name attached but he never believed it. And the Toronto Maple Leafs are ready to move a defenceman.

The NHL trade rumors are going to continue for a while in Vegas.

Vegas Hockey Now: Full analysis of the Jack Eichel trade. What did Vegas Golden Knights really give up?

After the trade, the Golden Knights will be $10 million over the cap when healthy. That means more trades…or here’s how Vegas can circumvent the salary cap until the summer.

Colorado: Jack Eichel thought (or hoped) he was going to the Colorado Avalanche…

Sportsnet: The Toronto Maple Leafs are looking for a partner on the NHL trade dancefloor. Toronto is offering two RHDs, for the right price.

NYI: The Buffalo Sabres also had salary cap worries after the Jack Eichel trade, except they had to meet the salary cap floor. So, they rang up the New York Islanders and traded for Johnny Boychuk’s hefty salary.

NHL News & National Hockey Now:

Ottawa: In other Tkachuk news, Matthew’s brother Brady has been named captain of the Ottawa Senators after signing a long-term deal there as the season started. Will the Calgary Flames follow suit with Matthew this year?

Vancouver: There’s a math question around former Calgary Flames defenceman Travis Hamonic’s availability. He’s had one shot of vaccine so far and his availability for their upcoming roadie is in question.

Washington: The Washington Capitals can never be counted out with a fired-up Alex Ovechkin. They forced overtime in a loss to the Florida Panthers with a furious three-goal rally. Ovechkin became the first player to score 10 goals this season, but Anthony Mantha was injured in the loss.

Boston: People sometimes forget how impressive Patrice Bergeron can be offensively. He went off with a four-goal game in the Bruins 5-1 win over the Detroit Red Wings.

Montreal: It’s about to get UGLY in Montreal. Another brutal, look away, loss by the Montreal Canadiens, who lost 6-2 to the New York Islanders.
