Calgary Looks To Wipe Away The Memory Of The Last Time They Played Dallas Tonight

Calgary plays game two of their homestand tonight and will try to get back in the win column against the Dallas Stars. Besides Dallas having an odd record, the more “odd” situation” today involves the Flames losing out to the Vegas Golden Knights in Jack Eichel Sweepstakes, so it’ll be interesting to see how that plays out in tonight’s contest. Now, back to actual hockey talk.

Calgary just had a six game winning streak snapped with an OT loss to Nashville where they outplayed the Predators for close to 60 minutes. It’s a game Calgary shouldn’t have lost, but they still managed to pick up a point in that contest, making it points in 8 straight games. Prior to this game the Flames called up Walker Dueher from the Stockton Heat to take Brett Ritchie’s place in the lineup. Ritchie dropped the gloves with Mark Borowiecki in the first period of Calgary’s 3-2 loss to the Preds and got absolutely rocked and did not return. Today Brett Ritchie was placed on IR and that cleared the way for Duehr, who was a bubble player during the preseason who looked like he had potentially played his way onto the Flames regular season roster.

As for Dallas, they’re having a tough, weird start to their season despite having three wins and eight points. Dallas is one of two NHL teams without a regular season victory, having gotten all of their three wins via shootout or overtime. The Stars are currently riding a four game losing streak and trying to snap that against the Flames won’t be an easy task. Dallas is almost (31st) dead last in goals this season with 17 GF and they’ve given up 25 goals leaving them with a -8 goal differential. Where Dallas has had some success is on the PP this season. As we mentioned above, Dallas has 17 goals total on the season and five of those 17 have come with the man advantage. Add it up (or divide in this case) and 29% of their goals are coming on the PP which is nice, but clearly not sustainable.

The last time these two franchises met was in the late summer Stanley Cup Playoffs in 2020 where Dallas ended the Flames season. The final insult was a 7-3 whooping the Stars handed the Flames on "home" ice to mercifully end a series that Calgary choked away. Dallas has also won seven out the last 10 games IN Calgary against the Flames, but this isn’t the same Dallas team that usually sees the Flames and beats them up and walks away with a low scoring win.
