Mavericks: Still In The Fight

Reid Still Leads ECHL Scoring Race Despite Team Skid

When we last checked in with the Flames ECHL affiliate, the team had fought their way back to a .500 record and managed to work they way into a playoff spot. KC had won five of their last eight contests and moved up a spot from 5th to 4th on the ECHL Western Conference playoff race. The team has cooled off slightly since, having dropped three of their last five games but knocking off the Allen Americans in back-to-back 4-2 games to finish this last stretch. This has dropped the Mavericks out of that 4th place playoff berth, but they currently only sit two points back of Tulsa for that spot, and have two games in hand.

At last check-in, Mavs star forward Brodie Reid had earned ECHL Player of the Month honours for January, and was sitting in sole possession of first place in ECHL scoring with a 3 point lead over Florida Everblades’ Michael Huntebrinker with one less game played. Brodie has continued to pad that hold on first place, now with a 5 point gap at 27 total on the season. The only ECHL player with more assists than Reid was fellow Maverick Giorgio Estephan, who was recalled by the Flames’ other affiliate club Stockton Heat on February 17th. This has left Brodie with a healthy team scoring lead. Offense is also coming from the back end, as Willie Corrin has notched 12 points through 20 games played and is in the top ten league-wide for defensemen scoring at 7th place.

In the blue paint, it’s been hectic fo the Mavs as they struggle to keep some consistency in the net. Sean Romeo has seen three of the last five starts and may be now taking the reigns.

There’s been a few other swaps in the crease, as Matt Greenfield was signed to a contract on January 9th after Andrew Shortridge was sidelined due to injury. Mario Vrab was picked up on February 5th. Sean Romeo was signed to a Standard Player Contract on January 28th after Joel Rumpel was loaned to Iowa of the AHL the day before. Matt Ginn was acquired in a trade with Greenville on February 12th, and has seen one game of action so far with his new team.

The Mavericks have a home-and-home set with the conference’s second place Wichita Thunder, whom they trail by five points, with a chance to make up some ground on a team ahead of them. It’s then a massive three-game set in the fight for the last playoff spot, as KC will square off with the Tulsa Oilers twice at home and once as the visitors. The team will then hit the road for five straight and the first stop will be a big test against the Eastern Conference leading Indy Fuel. Keep it locked to Matchsticks & Gasoline to follow the Mavericks on their playoff chase!
