Midway through round 6 of Wednesday’s NHL draft, the Flames had to announce their qualified RFA’s before the 3 pm MST deadline. 7 players were due to hit RFA status this extended offseason.
Of those 7, Andrew Mangiapane, Oliver Kylington, Glenn Gawdin, and Tyler Parsons were all qualified by the Flames. Mangiapane is up for arbitration, Parsons and Kylington’s future in Calgary is still in question, and Gawdin looks ready to push for an NHL spot.
It appears as though Mark Jankowski’s tumultuous tenure with the Flames is finally over. The huge reach first round pick in 2012 appeared to be a solid move by Jay Feaster as he scored 17 goals in his rookie campaign. Much like Sam Bennett, his numbers have only decreased along with the quality of play over the next few seasons, and he’s no longer even worth the 1.75 million he’s currently being paid.
Andrew Nielsen. a defenceman picked in the third round pick in 2015 by the Toronto Maple Leafs, was acquired for Morgan Klimchuk at the start of the 2018-19 season. He failed to score a single goal in 2 seasons with the Stockton Heat.
Nick Schneider was signed as an undrafted free agent, but failed to make an impression in the pro ranks after a solid junior career.
