Recap

David Rittich had a very poor performance giving up 5 goals in the first game of the Western Final. Matt Calvert potted 2 himself in the first, and Nathan MacKinnon added another in the same period. In the third, JT Compher and Nazem Kadri scored 50 seconds apart to bring the Avalanche total to 5 goals on 41 shots by game’s end. All in all, a poor defensive game by the Flames as they work to improve for Game 2.

Oh, and the Flames scored 12 goals.

It would be quite ridiculous to recap every single goal, so we’ll do them in bunches. Trailing 3-1 in the first, TJ Brodie found Milan Lucic at the far post to cut the lead in half. Austin Czarnik tipped Travis Hamonic’s shot with a single second remaining in the first, and the ridiculously bouncy puck evened the game.

Johnny Gaudreau scored his first of the game 1:44 into the second period to give the Flames their first lead, and then Calgary followed that up with 2 goals on a major powerplay after Ian Cole checked Dillon Dube from behind. Gaudreau tallied one of the powerplay goals, and then added the hat-trick marker with 4 minutes left to give the Flames a 7-3 lead going into the third.

Sean Monahan, Mikael Backlund, and Austin Czarnik all scored within the first 5 minutes of the third, and Elias Lindholm’s goal at the midway mark capped a 10 goal run for the Flames. The Avalanche added their two final goals shortly apart, and Sam Bennett iced the horrendous cake with 30 seconds left. The final damage was 12-5 Flames, as both teams will eagerly await the second round of this series Tuesday.

Flame of the Game

Everyone: Every single Flame (including David Rittich) recorded a point in this one, except for Matthew Tkachuk. Let’s hope this series doesn’t progress like last time.
