Recap

Well, we can breathe. After shockingly going up 3-0 against the defending cup champs and having a sweep in sight, the Flames lost two straight games to bring the series nearly even. Calgary had played sloppy in Games 4 and 5, falling behind 3-0 in both games and being forced to try and fight back.

Calgary finally got a good start at home. Mikael Backlund and Matthew Tkachuk continued their impressive series, as the two would hookup for the first goal of the game. Backlund hunted down Tkachuk’s rebound in the corner, and fed him for a backdoor tap-in past Jordano Binnington less than five minutes into the game.

The Flames would double their lead before intermission. Johnny Gaudreau slid a quick pass to Sean Monahan at the far circle, and he absolutely hammered a one-timer top shelf on Binnington. The goal was on a powerplay, and stands as the only powerplay goal of the entire series.

Similar to the opening goal of Game 3, the Flames were punished for not being able to clear their own zone. Dillon Dube was pinned along the boards, and has his kicked pass intercepted by Vince Dunn. Vladimir Tarasenko picked up the puck and found a streaking Brayden Schenn, who fired a beautiful wrist shot over David Rittich’s glove.

The game remained 2-1 for the remainder of the period, and the Flames only had to survive 20 more minutes to move on to the next round.

That task became a little easier, as Travis Hamonic floated a seeing-eye shot through traffic and past Binnington 5 minutes into the third period. Andrew Mangiapane picked off a Blues pass in the neutral zone and carried it deep. He passed it off to Dillon Dube who found Hamonic at the point for the quick shot. Derek Ryan provided an excellent screen in front on the goal.

Rittich stopped all 9 shots he faced in the third, and 27/28 in total. The Flames eliminate their second straight higher seeded team, and have now eliminated 3 total teams. Under our modified playoff structure, the Flames will still have to play in the Western Final, before possibly moving on to the Stanley Cup Finals.

Flame of the Game

David Rittich (G): Big Save Dave had rough back-to-back outings, but showed up huge when he was needed most. This series likely would have ended badly if it had gone to a Game 7.
