NHL Standings

The Flames return home to the Saddledome after a less than successful three game road trip to take on the Philadelphia Flyers. While Calgary has played four games over the past week, the Flyers have had the exact opposite schedule. After opening the season overseas Philly has only played a total of three games and they’ve been good to start the season. In their two victories the Flyers have scored eight goals and only given up three. Carter Hart has been a massive part of that success and it looks like Philadelphia finally has a top notch goaltender. Last year the Flyers went through eight goaltenders in what can be only described as a nightmare. The good news for the Flames? They’re not getting Hart. The Flyers will come back from a three day break with veteran and former Flames netminder Brian Elliott between the pipes.

More good news? Philly isn’t a fast starter (only one first period goal) and that could be a huge help to the Flames. Calgary has had a hard time getting going this season in the opening frame and Sunday night’s loss to the Sharks was a prime example. Despite outplaying the Sharks, Calgary went into the first intermission in a two goal hole. On the season Calgary has been out-scored 7-2 in the first 20 minutes and they’ve gone three straight games without a goal in the opening period.

Calgary is 7-3-0 in their last 10 against the Flyers, including a season sweep last year. Philadelphia is 26-31-9 overall at the Saddledome and they’ve also lost four times in their last five trips to Calgary.
