Nicklas Grossmann on Waivers again, This Time to Terminate Contract

He was likely done with the big club, now he's likely done with the club entirely.

When news broke only a few days ago that the Calgary Flames were sending Nicklas Grossmann down to the Stockton Heat, the reaction was nearly universally positive (There were 78 positive Facebook reactions to one negative – a 98.7% satisfaction rate). It now appears as though the organization may be entirely done with him. Elliotte Friedman broke news today stating the Flames much-maligned defenseman was placed on waivers again today, this time to terminate his contract entirely.

The termination of the contract would be great for Calgary. Grossmann was horrible by just about every metric one can put together. While it's reported that he's good in the locker room, having a guy that can't do anything other than serve as a perpetual healthy scratch is not exactly a great use of a roster spot on any level. The most questionable part of this is who actually wants him overseas.

Grossmann's numbers in the NHL this year were horrible. He was minus five and the team never scored while he was on the ice. His advanced numbers were also quite damning – among defensemen that played at least 30 minutes this season he was bottom five in relative shots for percentage, relative goals for percentage, and relative scoring chances against percentage in five-on-five situations adjusted for score, zone, and venue. He also took one penalty while drawing none in 39 minutes – over the course of an 82 game season given 20 minutes a game that would give the Flames a -42 penalty differential.
