After the Flames traded away their own second round pick at 35th overall for Brian Elliott yesterday, they still had picks 54 and 56, acquired in the Jiri Hudler and Kris Russell trades respectively.

54th Overall: G Tyler Parsons, London Knights (OHL)

37-9-3, .922 Save Percentage, 2.33 GAA

The Flames goaltending was a disaster this year, so they used their first of their two second round picks to shore up their goaltending position. Parsons was the goaltender for a dominant London Knights team, having a 37-9-3 record in the regular season, before winning the OHL Championship and the Memorial Cup. Parsons was the third ranked North American goalie in the draft, the second goalie to be drafted after the Flyers selected Carter Hart. While some Flames fans probably would have liked to see the Flames avoid drafting a goaltender, it is obviously a position of need for the organization. As the Flames likely spent a ton of time scouting Matthew Tkachuk and Olli Juolevi in London, they obviously saw a lot of Tyler Parsons and must have liked what they saw. While he had a great team in front of him, he definitely put up some strong numbers. At the Memorial Cup, Parsons put up a 1.72 GAA and .942 save percentage in 4 games played. Parsons is a long way out from having anything to do in the Flames net, but with Jon Gillies, Mason McDonald and now Tyler Parsons, the Flames have some depth in the future for the goalie position.

56th Overall: C Dillon Dube, Kelowna Rockets (OHL)

65 GP, 26 G, 40 A, 66 P, 50 PIM

Dillon Dube is fast, the draft broadcast immediately compared his speed to Carl Hagelin of the Stanely Cup Champs. The NHL is a speed game now more than ever and the Flames make Dube their pick to address this. He’s fast, he is chippy, he projects as a 2-way middle six player. Slightly undersized at 5’10”, the Flames obviously like what Dube brings to the table given their propensity of preaching size. Dube put up just over a point per game in the regular season, while he may have dropped in the draft due to scoring only 2 goals in 18 games in the playoffs. Dube is obviously a project for the Flames, but if he can continue to develop, he could be a strong depth piece on the Flames in the future.
