Flames Announce Prospect Camp Roster, Schedule

Amidst all the hubbub in the hockey wolrd the past couple of days the Flames announced the roster and schedule for this years Young Stars tournament. The roster and tournament sked (along with some other goodies) can be found at the Flames’ website here.

Hit the jump for some quick analysis on the roster.

There might be a couple names you don’t immediately recognize (guys like Blake Gal, Justin Dowling and Turner Elson), but a lot of those guys attended Development camp in June. I didn’t really notice anything spectacular or even out of the ordinary from these guys but the Org kept them around for some reason. Oh, wait, I know! Our prospect depth sucks, that’s why. However, there are guys on the roster who are brand new and didn’t attend Development camp:

  • 18 year old local product Peter Kosterman (Lake Bonavista what what), an undrafted 6’4 defenseman from the Hitmen who mostly played shutdown minutes last season. I don’t know that for sure but I assume that’s about the only way you can manage to have a stat line that reads as bad as 68GP, 1G, 6A & -14 does.
  • Reid Jackson, an 18 year old, 6’2 defenseman who milled about in Lethbridge last season. He was also undrafted. He put up 20 points and a -17 on a terrible Hurricanes team that sported a .342 W%.
  • Andrew Engelage, a 22 year old ‘tendy. Formerly Maple Leafs property, I assume Engelage was let walk this season due to the glut of goaltending prospects the Leafs currently possess. Engelage was not drafted and played in the ECHL for the majority of the season on the Utah Grizzlies, where he posted a .913 SV%.
  • Dustin Sylvester, some random dude that led his team (Freiburg EHC) in scoring with 60 points in 48 games in a league called the “2G.Bun”, the second tier league of the Bundesliga. He’s 5’6 and 22 years old and previous to last year played for the Kootenay Ice.

Obvously Sven Baertschi, T.J. Brodie and Greg Nemisz are the three big ones to watch. The first for his potential, and I’m expecting the other two to dominate the ice.

Like last year, the games will be streamed for free here. Barring any craziness, I will be attending the game against the Dinos and I'll try to get some interviews.
