Mavericks: Cooling Off For The Winter

KC Suffers 3 Straight Losses Including First L On Home Ice

Summary:

The Kansas City Mavericks were due for a cool down period. After winning 12 of 15 to start the season, a run that included a win streak of seven straight games and no losses on home ice, it was bound to happen. Although the Mavs added to their total in a home-and-home series sweep against the Wichita Thunder, including a thrilling shootout victory on the road, things came to a screeching halt afterwards. KC has since dropped three in a row, and finally succumbed on home ice taking a shutout loss to the league-and-division-leading Tulsa Oilers in the most recent of those losses. This drops KC to 3rd place in the ECHLโ€™s Mountain Division, seven points back of the Grizzlies and Oilers but with two games in hand moving forward.

Game By Game:

Nov 17- KC Mavericks 4 @ Wichita Thunder 3 WIN (Shootout)

Nov 23- KC Mavericks 4 vs Wichita Thunder 2 WIN

Nov 25- KC Mavericks 2 @ Tulsa Oilers 3 LOSS

Nov 27- KC Mavericks 2 @ Wichita Thunder 5 LOSS

Nov 30- KC Mavericks 0 vs Tulsa Oilers 1 LOSS

The Squad:

The Mavsโ€™ scoring has continued the old tradition of Jared Vanwormer and Mark Cooper battling it out for the team lead. Vanwormer has gotten himself onto a tear, collecting 5 points in his last five games (3G, 2A), rocketing into the team lead over Cooper and currently sitting 12th in ECHL scoring. Meanwhile, Coop has hit a rough patch along with the team, going pointless in his last five contests after racking up 8 in his previous 5 before that. He was previously 5th overall in league scoring and only 3 points out of the lead. Both Vanwormer and Cooper have dropped out of the top ten scoring race, with Vanwormer at 12th. Hereโ€™s a look at how the top five shakes out for Mavsโ€™ scoring:

Flames goalie prospect Mason McDonald grabbed four more starts on the year and a pair of additional wins, moving him to 7 victories in 9 games played. He currently sits with a 2.62 GAA and .900 even SV%.

Up Next:

KC will be home for three of their next four, which might bode well considering their success at Silverstein Eye Centers Arena this year. Things get grim after that, as the Mavsโ€™ hit the road for three straight against the Idaho Steelheads, who they are currently tied for the 3rd place spot in the division with. Theyโ€™ll tack on a fourth road game for a rematch with Wichita, making this their second longest road trip of the season behind the five straight theyโ€™ll play away from home to close out the regular season. Check back with M&G in two weeks to see how the Mavericks fare!
