Kris Versteeg Re-Signs with the Calgary Flames for a One Year, $1.75M Deal.

The utility forward is back on another reasonable deal.

Kris Versteeg is coming back to the Calgary Flames.

The very solid veteran forward has signed for another season with the club, at a very reasonable $1.75 million deal.

This seems like a very nice deal for both sides. Versteeg earns a nice raise on his terrific bargain of a contract of $900,000 from this past season, but gets to stay close to home with a team that is looking more and more like a contender every day. The Flames meanwhile, keep a player that was solid on the powerplay, can play both wings and slot on any of the top-3 lines, without expending much cap and no term on the player.

Versteeg had a solid 15 goals and 22 assists in 69 games. While his possession stats do not appear stellar at 47.8%, that mainly has to do with his time spent alongside Troy Brouwer, as Versteeg was over a 50% possession player when he was away from Brouwer. He also has some edge to his game for a smaller player and is excellent in shootouts. For someone who slotted on the third line last year, he has a lot of value.

He had some nice chemistry for Sam Bennett and if the Flames place somebody else effective with them, that has the makings of a strong third line.

This is an excellent contract. The Flames get a player they are familiar with, that wants to be there, has been a winner in his career, for a small amount of money and no long-term risk on a one-year deal.

Brad Treliving’s solid summer continues.
