Calgary Flames

Recap: Calgary Flames (1) @ Vancouver Canucks (2)

Mark Giordano got the Flames to OT, but Vancouver score early in the extra frame to win 2-1.

Calgary Flames 1 Vancouver Canucks 2 (OT)

The Flames began a 5 game road swing with a stop in Vancouver to take on the Canucks. The Flames would battle hard all night long and scrap to get this contest to OT, but would only manage 1 points as the Canucks would score early in OT to sink the Flames.

1st Period

Most of this period was largely uneventful. Calgary at one point had 5 shots on net and looked decent, but couldn’t get anything past Ryan Miller. Then the Canucks struck. On their first shot of the game, Alexander Edler shot a rolling puck from mid ice and beat Brian Elliott to put the Canucks up 1-0. Knuckler or not, Elliott needs to stop those shots as those are back breakers, especially when they give the home team momentum. Calgary got very lucky as the period was winding down and Brian Elliott made a save, the puck was loose and for some reason the officials blew the whistle killing the play while the puck was sitting on the door step. Vancouver would tuck it in, but the goal was taken off the board and the Flames dodged a bullet. The only power play of the period belonged to the Canucks as Kris Versteeg went to the bin for interference and then slammed the door to the penalty box and picked up another 2 minutes, putting the Flames PK on the ice for 4 minutes.

2nd Period

Calgary managed to kill off the 2+ minutes they had left on Versteeg’s penalties to start the period and the hockey really started to open up. The Flames and Canucks traded opportunities going end to end, but after 40 minutes neither team was able to find the back of the net and the score remained 1-0 in favor of the bad guys. Brian Elliott really settled down after the fluke goal in the first and kept the Flames within a goal for the period. The Flames managed to out shoot the Canucks 9-8 for the period, which evened the shots up at 18 a piece. As seems to be the case with the Flames all too often, Calgary was on the PK 3 times that period, but thankfully managed to kill all 3.

3rd Period

The third was a another 19 minutes filled with exciting hockey but not a goal to be found. The Flames would finally solve Ryan Miller as Mark Giordano would score with 5 seconds left in regulation to propel the Flames to OT.

The Canucks and Flames headed to OT tied at 1 and that did not last long at all. The Canucks took a loose puck in their end and charged to the Flames end and Chris Tanev beat Brian Elliott to give the Canucks a 2-1 OT win over the Flames.

Final Thoughts

The Flames were at least able to earn a point out of this game. Calgary got some help tonight as some of their competition in the West fell, but this was a game the Flames needed to win. Tonight’s contest ends the season series with the Canucks and the Flames finish 2-2-1 against Vancouver on the season.

Flame of The Game

Kris Versteeg. Versteeg was one of the more noticeable Flames on the ice tonight. He logged 19:06 TOI, 2 SOG, was 2/2 at the face off dot and had 1 blocked shot on the night.
