Calgary Flames

Top 25 Under 25: #4 Dougie Hamilton

After a uneven first half of the season Hamilton started to show why the Flames traded for him.

#4: Dougie Hamilton

Position: D

Age: 23

Team: Calgary Flames

Drafted: 2011 #9 (Round 1 Boston Bruins)

The Flames dealt for Dougie Hamilton during the 2015 NHL Draft and pretty much stole him from the Bruins. While the Flames gave up three draft picks, they received in return a young defenceman who will be part of their core for years to come.

Hamilton seemed to struggle early on with the transition from Boston to Calgary, but once he settled in you could see those glimpses of what made the Flames want to deal for the talented blue liner. Last year Hamilton set personal records for games played (82), goals (12) and points (43) and paired very well with Mark Giordano, Deryk Engelland or T.J. Brodie.

The Flames inked Hamilton to a 6 year, $34.5 million dollar contract that will pay him through the 2020-21 season, after which he will become a UFA. Even with their horrible salary cap situation, the Bruins appear to have given up on Hamilton too early and their impatience should be Calgary’s gain. While they had to pay him a good chunk of change, young defencemen who can put up points are a good thing to have and the Flames think this is money well spent.
