89 Champs: Where Are They Now: Dana Murzyn

The Calgary product was dealt to the Flames in time to win a Stanley Cup.

Sometimes dreams do come true and Dana Murzyn is proof positive of that. The Calgary Alberta product spent 2 years with the Hartford Whalers before being dealt to his home town Flames in 1987-88. The following season Murzyn played in 63 games for the Calgary Flames on the way to his only Stanley Cup Championship. The 6’2, 200lb defenceman helped man the blue line for the Flames that season and had 22 regular season points, including one game winning goal.

Murzyn spent part of the next season with Calgary before being dealt to the Vancouver Canucks. He would spend the next 9 years of his career playing in Vancouver playing in a career high 80 games in 1993-94. Injuries hampered his career towards the end and after the 1998-99 season Murzyn hung up his skates.

Dana Murzyn is an active member of the Flames Alumni, playing in the Alumni game before the Heritage Classic. In retirement he has built homes and even been a butcher. He and his family reside in the Calgary area.
