Daily Scan: Hanifin homecoming, Flames lineup questions, NHL COVID outbreaks examined

Calgary Flames Noah Hanifin

You’ll have to wait for the official Calgary Flames lineups because with both the Boston Bruins and Flames having played on Saturday night, Sunday morning did not include a practice. Among the major questions are will goalie Dan Vladar get the start against the team that drafted him, and will defenceman Juuso Valimaki ever get into the lineup again? Meanwhile, the COVID numbers in the NHL continue to spike in bunches. The Flames faced a couple of shorthanded teams on this trip in Ottawa and New York.

One Calgary Flames player we know will be in the lineup is Noah Hanifin, a Boston product who comes in hot with three assists in the 5-0 win over New York.

“It’s been a couple of years. It’s always a game I have circled in the calendar just to get home and play in front of family and friends,” Hanifin told Flames TV on Sunday morning. “I’m going to have a lot of people here tonight. It’s always pretty surreal to come back home and play in front of the home town.

“I love coming back. It’s always such a blast. Even more for my family and friends. It’s been a tough last few years, they haven’t been able to see me play many games in person. It’s a good night for them to come out.”

Oh Canada! Canada Hockey Now

Montreal: Hey, the Habs looked like a team capable of winning again and had some much-needed fun in 6-3 win over Predators.

Toronto: So is Tristan Jarry actually good? The goaltender and his Penguins shut down Maple Leafs, 2-0.

Vancouver: Conor Garland is small but he’s having a big impact and the Canucks beat a pretty good team in the Winnipeg Jets.

Detroit: Five Takeaways (can’t be much positive) as the Red Wings finish a winless road trip.

Washington: Alex Ovechkin strikes again and Samsonov is clutch as the Capitals thrash the Sharks.
