There’s a New #3 in Town

Newly acquired Jyrki Jokipakka is young enough that Coach Hartley has the potential to mold him into an offensive defenceman.

6′-3″ 215lbs.
Shoots Left
Born August 20, 1991 in Tampere, Finland
Drafted 195th overall in the 7th round of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft by the Dallas Stars

(Stats from the Calgary Flames website)

In his last 5 games Jyrki Jokipakka picked up 2 assists for 2 points and had a plus/minus rating of +2.

Throughout the season, he played in 58 games and finished the season with 2 goals and 10 assists for 12 points according to the Flames website. Only 18 of those games were in a Flames uniform where he got 6 assists, however that matched his 6 points he scored with Dallas in 40 games.

As reported in an earlier Matchsticks article, Jokipakka came to Flames with Brett Pollock from the Dallas Stars. In exchange the Flames sent Kris Russell to Dallas. By no means is Jokipakka a superstar like Johnny Gaudreau or a Erik Karlsson, but he is still young enough to molded into whatever kind of defenceman the Flames need.

Jyrki played in Finland from 2006 to 2013 and his best campaign so far was during the 2007/08 season when he played for Ilves U17 in the Jr. B2 SM-sarja league where he scored 2 goals and 10 assists for 12 points in just 12 games.

If he can keep up the consistent effort with the Flames, I have a feeling we will hear a lot more from him in the near future.
