Jets’ Dubois Still Angry Over “Dirty Play” By Flames Goalie Markstrom

Calgary Flames goaltender Jacob Markstrom really riled up Winnipeg Jets centre Pierre-Luc Dubois on Saturday night.

Dubois intentionally shot the puck wide after the whistle on an offside play, but was shoved through the crease by Rasmus Andersson. The setup left Markstrom with a chance to sneak in some contact. The goalie quickly stuck out the left pad. Dubois fell and crashed into the boards, but came away unscathed.

Well, uninjured, anyway. He was livid, so there were definitely some hurt feelings.

“I thought he took his leg out, tripped me. It’s a dangerous play. I think that’s a dirty play,” Dubois told reporters post-game.

“We talk about goalie safety and all that, and I’m 100 per cent on board for that. But, you know, I wasn’t going towards him. Yeah, I get pushed … I thought his leg came out; I didn’t look at the replay. Maybe it doesn’t, maybe it didn’t. If it didn’t, I’ll take back what I said. But I thought that was a very dangerous, very dirty play.”

Dubois isn’t wrong. The pad clearly came out and made contact. And the result was dangerous. It’s fortunate Dubois wasn’t going more quickly at the time.

And Dubois seems to have a good memory, too. He pulled out a reference to Aaron Dell’s hit on Ottawa’s Drake Batherson last January, which resulted in a three-game suspension.

Dubois also referenced the hit by Aaron Dell on Drake Batherson from January, which earned Dell a three-game suspension. But Dell’s hit was during play and much more obvious in its intentions. Markstrom’s move was subtle and he took a tripping call that actually put the Calgary Flames down two men at the time.

Markstrom was just as frustrating against the Jets with his big saves, including a majestic windmill stop on Mark Scheifele. Double stacking the pads and flipping around, Markstrom got his pad and glove on the puck.

“That’s what happens when you’re late across,” Markstrom said on Sunday. “I felt it and I’m just glad it was our guys there to clear it away while I was on my stomach.”

The goalie was key to snapping the seven-game slump and will be an important part of any success going forward.
