Flames land Toffoli in trade with Canadiens

The Calgary Flames have made a huge move on the NHL trade market, landing winger Tyler Toffoli in exchange for prospect Emil Heineman, Tyler Pitlick, first-round pick in 2022 and fifth-round picks in 2024.

According to Pierre Lubrun, the first-rounder is top-10 protected, which would move it to 2023 instead.

Toffoli is a right-handed shot who plays the right side – a spot the Flames have been looking to reinforce for a decade.

Calgary Flames head coach Darryl Sutter coached him with the Los Angeles Kings, winning the Stanley Cup together in 2014 when Toffoli was a rookie. He has two more years at a reasonable salary, and the net gain for the Flames is $2.5 million.

It complicates their cap situation next year but they have time to figure it out and lose only Pitlick from the current active roster. Pitlick has been ineffective with the Flames after they traded for the winger this summer and hasn’t been able to get back into the lineup.

The Flames acquired Heineman, 20, from the Florida Panthers in the Sam Bennett trade. Calgary was able to hang on to top prospects like Dustin Wolf, Jakob Pelletier, Connor Zary and Matt Coronato.

Toffoli, a native of Scarborough, Ontario has notched nine goals and 17 assists for 26 points in 37 games this season with the Montreal Canadiens. A five-time 20-goal scorer, Toffoli has 370 points (182G, 188A) in 614 career NHL games split between Los Angeles, Vancouver, and Montreal. The 29-year-old has 76 games of playoff experience and has made two Stanley Cup Finals appearances (2014, 2021), winning the Cup with the Kings in 2014. Toffoli has also represented his country on the international stage, winning gold with Team Canada at the 2015 World Championships.

There has also been talk about an offer previously made for defenceman Ben Chiarot, but no news on that front so far today.

Stay tuned for updates.
