The Daily: Penguins March to Dome, Monahan Trade Bait Again?

As the Calgary Flames prepare for the Pittsburgh Penguins, plenty of questions remain. Although they’ve started 4-1 on the season, they have had struggles at the start of games. They’ve also relied very heavily on special teams play. With Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin coming to town, they’ll need a well-rounded game to add to their win column.

The Penguins played last night in Edmonton. Here’s a view from the other side — from Pittsburgh Hockey Now. The Edmonton Oilers turned it up, and the Penguins were in trouble. Here are five takeaways from the Pittsburgh Penguins’ 6-3 loss.

From a Flames perspective, Tyler Toffoli is off to a hot start but the top line still looks … off. He’s earned some patience, though.

So has goaltender Jacob Markstrom, who has allowed a goal on the first shot he’s faced in three of four starts. Not great, but he has been a strong finisher in most of them.

At least defenceman Rasmus Andersson is looking like a stud so far.

FLA: Eric Staal’s road to joining the Florida Panthers was not the easiest one but his patience paid off.

DET: Detroit Red Wings head coach knows what it takes to build a winning hockey team, and he’s staying realistic about where the Red Wings are at despite some early success.

VGK: The six best moments of Vegas Golden Knights Phil Kessel’s career as he approaches the Ironman record.

SJS: The signs were there in the San Jose Sharks’ 3-0 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers, even though Meier and Hertl didn’t score any goals.

DAL: The Dallas Stars are off to one of the hottest starts in their history, and they aren’t overthinking it. They were a tough test for the Calgary Flames in the first round last spring.
