Brotherly love tap: Matthew Tkachuk nails brother Brady’s bits

The National Hockey League — no, the world — needs more Tkachuk brothers content. After years of competing head to head, no one expects Calgary Flames winger Matthew and Ottawa Senators captain Brady to drop the gloves. But that doesn’t mean they don’t battle.

During the Flames’ disappointing 4-1 loss to the Senators on Thursday, there was a must-see moment that likely had their dad grinning and their mom frowning.

Joining a bunch of Senators teammates protecting the crease, Brady Tkachuk shoved an off-balance Matthew Tkachuk to the ice. Instinctively, Matthew swung his stick right up into his little brother’s groin area. The video evidence is all you need here.

Just imagine what their road hockey matchups look like.

Hockey fans don’t get to see them play against each other enough. Their teams face off twice a year. Thursday’s game was their last meeting with the Flames leaving Ottawa with a win earlier this season.

That meeting was their first since Brady was given the Senators captaincy, leading to a humorous pre-game exchange at centre ice and some great comments from Matthew about who the real captain is in the family (spoiler alert: it’s really mom).

“Deep down, he knows I still make the calls when we’re together in the summer,” Matthew said at the time. “He can be the captain for his team … but he knows who’s the captain in the summer. It’s probably my Mom, honestly.”

Having great individual seasons for the Calgary Flames and Ottawa Senators, the Tkachuk brothers had a very good chance of playing as teammates on the world’s biggest stage as members of Team USA at the upcoming Beijing Games. But the NHL terminated the deal to send its players. The COVID-19 outbreaks forced a need to reschedule a high number of games in order to complete an 82-game slate.

Who else wants these two to have a reality-TV series that follows them every summer?
