Johnny Gaudreau, Calgary Flames, NHL trade

Calgary Flames speedster Johnny Gaudreau was named the NHL’s Third Star of the Week on Monday after putting up two goals and eight points in four games last week. That included his amazing overtime winner against the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday night. Elsewhere in the NHL, Carey Price talks about his recovery, and the Philadelphia Flyers and Vancouver Canucks could become sellers at the 2022 NHL Trade Deadline.

But let’s get back to Gaudreau, who helped the Calgary Flames go 3-1-0 for the week. That had them holding a wild card position in the Western Conference.

Gaudreau racked up seven points over his first two games, with a goal and four points in a huge 7-1 win over the St. Louis Blues at the Dome. He followed up with three assists in a 6-0 victory on the road against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

He was blanked in a 5-1 loss in the Blues rematch but was the overtime hero against the Canucks.

After missing on a penalty shot in regulation, Gaudreau got revenge on Canucks goalie Thatcher Demko 30 seconds into OT with a sneaky low-blocker slapper that was intentionally placed.

“I know Thatcher very well and I scored a couple times high glove on him last year.” Gaudreau said. “Had the opportunity to score a couple times on the high glove, so I think he knew it was coming. So then on the overtime goal, I switched it up and went blocker side and found a way to beat him there.”

NHL NEWS, TRADE RUMORS, AND NATIONAL HOCKEY NOW

NHL All-Star Game: Gaudreau is the guy for the Calgary Flames. But with Nathan Mackinnon and Adam Fox out, Roman Josi and Evgeny Kuznetsov will replace them at the 2022 NHL All-Star Game in Las Vegas. Joe Pavelski replaces Mackinnon as the Central Divisions captain as well.

Montreal: After months of silence in the NHL/NHLPA’s Player Assistance Program Carey Price spoke to the media on his recovery from his offseason knee surgery. Price has not played a game this season.

NHL Trade Rumor: Claude Giroux is on the trade block for the Flyers, a city that also seems to be infatuated with the idea of stealing Gaudreau from the Calgary Flames.

Detroit: At 46 games, what is right and wrong with the Detroit Red Wings?

Colorado: As a pending free agent, has the impressive play from Nazem Kadri this season priced him out of town for the Colorado Avalanche? Remember when the Calgary Flames were rejected by Kadri?

Vegas: The Golden Knights resigned three players Sunday to multi-year extensions. Michael Amadio and Logan Thompson got near league-minimum extensions and Brayden McNabb signed a three-year deal with an AAV of $2.85 million. After the Jack Eichel trade (the salt in the wound never stops, Flames fans), both Alex Tuch and Peyton Krebs are returning to T-Mobile Arena with Buffalo this week.
