Calgary Flames are on the Tkachuk clock now

Calgary Flames winger Matthew Tkachuk is in the last year of his current contract

Calgary Flames winger Matthew Tkachuk didn’t join reporters to chat about his brother Brady’s big signing with the Ottawa Senators Thursday morning. But Matthew’s Twitter reply to a post from little bro probably summed up what he would have said on the podium. An explosive deal.

Matthew put up three mind-exploding emojis as a reply to a gif of Heath Ledger’s Joker.

On the day of their home opener, Brady Tkachuk signed up for seven seasons and $57.5 million (an $8.214M AAV) to end a long negotiation process. He won’t play tonight but he will wear an A when he does suit up. There is also the expectation he will be named captain sooner or later.

Matthew either knows it’s coming or is guessing that will be the case. His since-deleted comment on Instagram called him captain.

The Calgary Flames member of the Tkachuk family will make $7 million in his final year of a bridge deal he signed three years ago. He becomes an RFA this summer. Matthew is also in the running to become captain for the Flames, although no announcement is imminent and the team may play with a rotation of assistants for some time before naming the replacement for new Seattle Kraken captain Mark Giordano.

Matthew Tkachuk is playing on the top line in practice with Elias Lindholm at centre and Johnny Gaudreau on his wing. Expectations are higher for this core group as the pandemic restrictions decrease and a sense of normalcy returns.

Looks like the Flames are on the Tkachuk clock now.
