Flames Look To Get Back In Win Column With Season Sweep Of The NY Rangers

These two are pretty much the same teams so far this season.

Calgary Flames vs NY Rangers, 8 PM MT, Scotibank Saddledome, Calgary AB

Calgary Flames 6-1-3 (15 pts) – NY Rangers 6-2-3 (15 pts)

TV: CBC, SN. CITY – Radio: Sportsnet 960

Odds: Calgary Flames (-120), NY Rangers (+100), O/U: 5.5

Even with a two game losing streak, the Flames have still managed to keep their points streak going (9 straight games) by getting a loser point in an OT loss to Dallas Thursday night. They can extend that to 10 games if they can sweep the season series from the NY Rangers tonight, a team making their only visit to the Saddledome this season.

NY sits in 2nd place in the Metropolitan and pretty much are a mirror image of the Flames. They have 15 points. They sandwiched a winning streak between two losing streaks, but got points in each losing skid by getting to at least overtime. They have strong goaltending. They have very solid special teams. It’s basically like looking at a carbon copy of the Flames. The main different between these two squads is goal differential: the Rangers are +1, where Calgary is +12.

The thing to watch in this matchup will be the goaltending. Both Jacob Markstrom and Igor Shesterkin (both assumed to start) are having outstanding seasons. Markstrom leads the NHL is shutouts with three so far and has the 6th best GAA with a measly 1.86. Not to be outdone, Shesterkin has one shutout under his belt and is 5th in GAA (1.85) and his .943 Save% is 4th best overall among goaltenders. These two went head to head back on October 25th with Jacob Markstrom getting the better of his counterpart, stopping 28 of the 29 shots that came his way in a 5-1 victory in NYC.

Both teams have dropped two in a row in overtime, but it’s been a little harder for the Rangers. NY has been lit up for nine goals total in their two losses (Vancouver and Edmonton), whereas the Flames have only surrendered seven, while scoring five. NY will most certainly be looking for a better showing after getting blown out by the Flames at home and dropping two in a row on their four game Western road trip.

Puck drop is at 8 PM MT from the Saddledome.
