Calgary Flames Matthew Tkachuk

Whatever you choose to believe about Calgary Flames winger Matthew Tkachuk and whether his name surfaced in the Jack Eichel NHL trade talks, the story of Tkachuk’s future as a Flame awaits its ending.

Some claim Matthew Tkachuk’s name was never mentioned, despite Hockey Now network sources from both sides of the negotiations suggesting both Sean Monahan and Tkachuk were discussed. For the record, National Hockey Now’s Editor-in-Chief stands by the information shared by sources this week amid the frantic Eichel finish.

Neither the Buffalo Sabres, nor the Calgary Flames have anything to gain by confirming the pieces of the back-and-forth bartering, but both have every reason to ensure the players whose names leaked feel wanted by their current clubs. You may believe Sabres GM Kevyn Adams sewered Brad Treliving by dropping Tkachuk’s name to get the Vegas package completed hours later. You may also believe his vocal denial the next day that Tkachuk was ever in the discussion was damage control to preserve a working relationship with Treliving for future dealings.

As for Tkachuk’s future, there is much uncertainty – and that has nothing to do with the Eichel situation.
