The Daily Scan: Vegas backing off Eichel? Jets owner strikes right tone

Calgary Flames Dillon Dube Jack Eichel

While Emily Kaplan was telling us that the Calgary Flames and Vegas Golden Knights are the two finalists for Jack Eichel’s eventual services, another insider was suggesting the optimism for a Vegas deal was cooling … again. Does that make the Flames the last team standing? Stay tuned for the most dramatic season of NHL Trade Rumours yet. As Calgary Hockey Now wrote last night, the price is steep and it might be tough for the Flames to justify. Meanwhile the Winnipeg Jets set the right tone talking about the Kyle Beach/Chicago Blackhawks situation but the bar is very low.

NHL Trade Rumors, a.k.a. Jack Eichel Central

Jeff Marek Show: Elliotte Friedman said optimism for a Vegas-Eichel deal is cooling. Bad news for Vegas fans but maybe good news for Calgary Flames fans?

The Buffalo News: Mike Harrington noted that Calgary Flames VP of hockey operations Don Maloney was spotted at two recent Sabres games against the Anaheim Ducks and Los Angeles Kings. Could be coincidence but it adds a little fuel to the fire. Harrington also said the Flames lack the prospect depth of other clubs in the bidding (not sure that’s totally accurate if we’re talking non-NHL prospects) but suggests that with the Sabres off to a good start, maybe GM Kevyn Adams is seeking more immediate help.

News & National Hockey Now

New Jersey: Devils defenceman Dougie Hamilton left their loss at Anaheim with a lower-body injury. Hamilton was a big free agent addition in the offseason and had been very effective to start the season for New Jersey. Serious question Calgary Flames fans might want to know – why does Dougie move around so much?

Winnipeg: Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff and team owner Mark Chipman addressed the media Tuesday, regarding Kyle Beach and Cheveldayoff’s role in Chicago at the time. They struck a more empathetic tone than the league, but that is a low bar. TSN’s Rick Westhead wasn’t totally buying it.

Pittsburgh: Kasperi Kapanen is the Penguins’ Sean Monahan. Kapanen was demoted to the fourth line on Monday. The Penguins had an off day on Tuesday. It was head coach Mike Sullivan sending more tough love to Kapanen, who remains inconsistent. How long will the Penguins wait for Kapanen?

Montreal Hockey Now: Carey Price could return to the NHL this week, but as Jon Still writes–so what. Price can’t save the Canadiens, and he should take the time he needs.

Vegas: William Karlsson out 4-6 weeks with a broken foot. For a Golden Knights team already missing Alex Tuch, Max Pacioretty, and Mark Stone, this is not helpful.

Toronto: Oh what a pretty goal–Mitch Marner and his silky mitts potted a sick goal against Vegas in the win. Here’s the highlight.

Detroit: Moritz Seider is one of the Detroit Red Wings super rookies. He keeps piling up the accolades and awards, including NHL rookie of the month.

Colorado: Uh oh, Cale Makar has been placed on IR, and that’s bad news for the Colorado Avalanche. Not such great news for Makar, either.

Vancouver: Good news for the Penguins–the Vancouver Canucks took the extra point from the New York Rangers, 3-2. Get the full scoop from Vancouver.Â
