Odds: Calgary Flames (-105), Philadelphia Flyers (-115), O/U: 6

The Flames return to Calgary as champions of the road, having won all five games on their trip through the Eastern Conference. It’s the first time Calgary has won five in a row since 2007 and they took care of the East in impressive fashion. They outscored their opponents 21-7 on the trip, scoring four or more goals four times on the trip. The most impressive part of the trip? Jacob Markstrom. The Flames goaltender pitched two shutouts on the road (Detroit & Pittsburgh) and stopped a herculean 115 of the 116 shots he saw in three games.

Of the five teams Calgary faced, four were from the very tough Metropolitan Division and that trend continues as the Flames settle in at home. The Flyers come to town today for their only regular season visit and they’ve been playing decent hockey of late. Philly sits in 5th place in the Met, yet they own a 4-1-1 record on the season. The Flyers have won four out of their last five and are currently 2-0-0 on their swing through Western Canada having dispatched the Oilers and Canucks with relative ease.

What should be exciting about this game is both teams have elite offensive talent that has been VERY hot lately. Calgary has Johnny Gaudreau, Elias Lindholm and Andrew Mangiapane, all who are tearing it up in the opponents end. Gaudreau got his first tally of the season in Pittsburgh, but he leads the league in assists (9) and is 5th overall in points (10). Plus he’s only been held without a point in one game so far this season. And we all know how well Lindholm and Mangipane have been playing. Each were held without a goal in Pittsburgh, but had been unstoppable up to that point. The two have combine for 14 goals on the season and are the second and third best goal scorers in the league behind Alex Ovechkin.

Not to be outdone are the Flyers top guns in Cam Atkinson and Logan Couture. Atkinson is 9th overall in the league in goals with 6 (7 points total) and Couture’s 9 points have him tied for 11th overall in the league. And just when you think you’re safe after those two, the Flames will be staring at Claude Giroux who has seven points in his last five games and Travis Konecny has started to heat up with points in four of his last five games.

With all that offence, this game will be decided on the blue line and between the pipes and if you’re a Flames fan you have to be confident in those groups. Calgary was without Noah Hanifin in Pittsburgh and Michael Stone stepped in a handled his business just fine. Oliver Kylington not only provided offence on that road trip, but he also helped settle the Flames D and Chris Tanev has looked much better since the two were paired up. And when it comes to between the pipes, yes, Carter Hart is a good young talent and should be for the foreseeable future, but you have to bet on Jacob Markstrom at this point in the season with his play as of late.

All in all, this should be a very entertaining game between the Flames and Flyers, even if Philadelphia hasn’t played well in Calgary in recent history. Philly has lost five out of the last seven times they’ve paid a visit to the Saddledome.
