NHL Standings

Don’t look now, but the Flames are making a push in the North Division as the season winds down. The Flames got a huge 4-2 victory Friday night over the Canadiens and are now six points behind the Habs for the final playoff spot in the North Division. To make this “push” worthwhile Calgary needs to win another game in this three game set if they have any hope of catching the Canadiens. A full sweep is ideal and with Calgary’s success against Montreal this season, it’s not out of the question. Montreal is one of two teams (Vancouver the other) that the Flames have a winning record against and they’ve owned the Canadiens in 2021. The Flames victory Friday night made their record 5-2-0 against Montreal and if they could tack on another win tonight, the pressure goes from the Flames to win, to Montreal to not choke.

It sounds basic, but the Flames need more of what they did Friday night in this contest. They exploded for three straight goals to close out Montreal, limited the shots Jacob Markstrom had to face (20), limit Montreal’s PPO (1) and Calgary dominated the face off dot at 61.4%. Keeping the pedal to the metal should be the message that Darryl Sutter is sending to his team because if you switch the pressure to win to your opponent your life becomes that much easier. Win tonight and that four point deficit will seem like almost nothing compared to what it could have been by losing.
