NHL Standings

The Flames certainly took care of business Saturday night, shutting out the Vancouver Canucks for their first win of the season. The Flames really clicked on all cylinders in that contest, especially when the special teams were involved. Calgary killed all four penalties they took, including killing a 5 on 3 and they also excelled with the man advantage. The Flames PP units were on point, scoring all of their goals on the power play, all in all going 3 for 6. Not a bad night and the best part was the fact that they didn’t blow their lead and walked away with two points for their effort.

As for tonight’s game, the Flames need to continue the style of play that got them their victory on Saturday. They didn’t let up, peppered Braden Holtby with shots, got more than you could ask from the PP/PK groupings and were the more physical team on the ice. A repeat of that type of performance and the Flames should be able to walk away with another victory.

Looking at it from the Vancouver side, that had to a tough loss to swallow. Not only did they lose to a bitter rival, but their former players had a huge hand in handing them the defeat. Jacob Markstrom faced 32 shots and stopped every single one to earn his first shut out of the season. Besides that stellar performance there was the work put in by Chris Tanev. The former Canuck blocked a game high eight shots on the night, just three less than Vancouver blocked as a team. As far as “revenge” or first game against your former team’s go, it could not have gone any better for those two.

Seeing these two just played each other there really isn’t much that’s new or has changed since Saturday. The Flames need a repeat performance tonight and they have to be extremely confident coming into this game based on how well they played in their 3-0 win.
