As we get closer to the start of the regular season, the Flames have placed three players on waivers. Defenceman Oliver Klyington and forwards Zac Rinaldo and Derek Ryan all received the news today and all reportedly cleared waivers.
The Kylington news is interesting from the standpoint that it was thought he’d compete for, at minimum, the final or extra defenceman spot, but it appears the Flames have other plans. As of now, Calgary has Mark Giordano, Noah Hanifin, Rasmus Andersson, Juuso Valimaki, Chris Tanev and Nikita Nesterov to man the blue line. This means Kylington will spend his time in either Stockton or potentially being traded. The Flames have never seemed to be too high on Kylington and today’s move likely confirms that.
As for Derek Ryan and Zac Rinaldo, both will most likely spend time between Stockton and Calgary as well. The Rinadlo move relieves the Flames of some toughness, but the rugged forward played in only 19 games and had five points and 34 PIM in 2019-20. The Derek Ryan move is interesting from the standpoint that Calgary loses a solid faceoff man and a player who always showed up when he was on the ice. Calgary does have a log jam of centre’s and Sam Bennett re-emerging at that position kind of puts a wrench in the gears of the Flames machine. Without Ryan, the Flames have Elias Lindholm, Sean Monahan, Mikael Backlund and Sam Bennett as true centres. It would make sense Ryan would be the odd man out if the Flames plan on shuffling players around.
Don’t count any of these players out when it comes to making appearances with Calgary this season. There’s a very short season on the horizon with very few breaks which means there will be injuries, so all three of these players could end up wearing the Flaming C at some point.
