Flames Best #35 Of All Time: Jeff Reese

Jeff Reese holds an NHL record he set while with the Flames.

Not a lot of players have worn the #35 in Flames history and those that did weren’t there long or very good. The diamond in the rough of that group is former backup goalie Jeff Resse, who played with the Calgary Flames from 1991-94.

Jeff Reese was already an established goaltender, having been the backup in Toronto for five and a half seasons before the Flames acquired him in the blockbuster, 10 player trade that send Doug Gilmour to Toronto (along with Jamie Macoun and Ric Nattress). Reese’s primary job would be to backup then Flames legend Mike Vernon. Reese would play in 39 games for Calgary over those three seasons, posting a record of 17-6-3 with a 3.39 GAA and a Save% of .889. His best season with the Flames would be 92-93 where he would go 14-4-1, stopping 559 of the 629 shots that came his way.

His last season in Calgary would come in 1993-94 where he would play in only one game and be traded to the Hartford Whalers early on in that season. Reese would play six more seasons in the NHL for Tampa Bay, New Jersey and Toronto again to close out his career.

Outside of his stellar backup season with 14 wins, he’s known for his offense during a Flames 13-1 victory. He would dish out three assists in that game setting an NHL record for assists in a game by a goalie.

After retiring in 1999 the Tampa Bay Lightning would make Reese their goalie coach and he nwould win a Stanley Cup as member of their staff by defeating the Calgary Flames in 2004. In 2015 he was signed as the goaltending coach for the Dallas Stars which is a position he still holds to this day.
