Masterton Finalists Announced, Mark Giordano Not One Of Them

The Flames Captain was a long shot as it was.

Let’s face it, he was a long shot to win it anyway, but Flames Captain Mark Giordano is NOT one of the three finalists for the Bill Masterton Trophy for 2019-20. The Flames defenceman had a decent resume to be in the discussion, but the three players chosen as finalists always had a much better shot to win it than Giordano.

The Masterton Trophy is awarded to the player in the NHL every season who “best exemplify the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey.” While Mark Giordano certainly fits that description, the competition for the award was stiff this season. The three finalists are Bobby Ryan, Oskar Lindblom and Stephen Johns. All three of them have incredible stories and there’s no way Mark Giordano was going to be able to compete with any of them. In an earlier article we detailed the players and stated their cases for the award and I, personally, think it’s all about Oskar Lindblom. His season was an absolute nightmare due to cancer and his return to Philadelphia (as a spectator) was about as inspirational as you can get.

The award was supposed to be handed out on June 18th at the NHL Awards, but due to the postponement because of Covid-19, it will be handed out during the Conference Finals. Last year NY Islanders goalie Robin Lehner took home the award.
