The Calgary Flames have signed RW Troy Brouwer, formerly of the St. Louis Blues to a 4 year deal at $4.5 million a season. Troy Brouwer is coming off a season in which he scored 18 goals and 21 assists for 39 points in 82 games. He was also a strong contributor in the Blues playoff run, where he scored 8 goals and 5 assists in 20 playoff games. Brouwer joins the group of Stanley Cup winning Blackhawks on the Flames roster, with Michael Frolik and Brandon Bollig also winning the cup on the Blackhawks. Our own MattyFranchise looked at Brouwer as a possible free agent target earlier.

In adding Troy Brouwer, the Flames address multiple needs on their roster. The Flames were severely lacking natural right wings in the past season; Josh Jooris was their only right shot winger that was a regular last season. Brouwer also adds some much needed size that the Flames covet, at 6 feet 3 inches, 213 pounds. Brouwer will be 31 years of age at the start of this upcoming season so while he is on the wrong side of 30, he should be able to help the Flames out for years.

Brouwer will have an opportunity to play a significant role on the Flames. While he is not an elite talent, he is a strong complementary player who can play physically, crash the net and create space for his teammates. He could slot in nicely on the right side of Sean Monahan and Johnny Gaudreau to provide some protection and space for the skilled guys, while creating some room for those boys to do their thing. Another intriguing situation would be to have him play with Sam Bennett and Matthew Tkachuk, mentoring the young guys who are much more skilled than Brouwer but also have the ability to play a physical game. Treliving addresses some needs for the Flames in Brouwer, it will be interesting to see if he can take his offensive game to another level alongside the Flames young skilled players. This contract likely means the end of Joe Colborne’s time in Calgary, the Flames likely do not have the cap to sign him.
