Brandon Hickey and the Flames decided earlier this summer that is was best for the Alberta product to head back to Boston and continue his work with the BU Terriers. The Flames have struck some “gold” out the the Hockey East Conference (Johnny Gaudreau, Mark Jankowski, Jon Gillies) and there’s hope Hickey could pan out. The 6’2 blue liner has piled up the games played over the last 2 seasons between the NCAA and playing for Canada’s U20 Team in the World Juniors. Hickey also skated with the Flames recently in their developmental camp with fellow NCAA prospect Tim Harrison. While his point totals were basically cut in half from the prior season, Hickey lead the Terriers in blocked shots with 56 and his 28 PIM were tied for 3rd on the team. Hickey returns to a BU team that last season went 21-13-5 and lost in the NCAA Frozen Four to Denver. Hockey’s Future grades Hickey out as a C in the Probability of Success Scale. Hickey is a big defender who can put the puck in the net, shows the ability to be physical and block shots, three things the Flames are fond of in their defencemen. The Flames have gotten a good look at Hickey between camps, the NCAA (he plays in arguably the best conference in college hockey) and the World Juniors. They should know what they have and what potential there is for Hickey down the road. A strong showing this season at BU could push both parties to make a tough decision come Spring 2017.
Hickey and the BU Terriers open up their 2016-17 season on October 8th at Colgate. For more information on Hickey and BU Hockey click here.
