Stockton: Friday Update
Rough opening week for the Heat
Of the 23 players who donned the Stockton Heat jersey this past weekend, 12 did so for the first time. With such a drastic roster turnover from last year, including a new head coach, it could be expected the Heat struggle out of the gate.
They did not disappoint that expectation.
The Heat fell 8-1 in their season opener in Bakersfield. Tyler Parsons started the game, but only lasted 28:32, before being pulled after allowing 5 goals on just 20 shots. Jon Gillies came in relief, but fared little better, giving up 3 more goals.
Special teams were a particular sore spot, as the Heat gave up 4 powerplay goals on 7 chances, while also giving up a shorthanded goal.
Kerby Rychel scored the only Heat goal.
The following night the Heat played host to the Ontario Reign for their home opener. The offence came to life, but the Heat fell 6-5 in overtime.
Despite having 2-0, 4-1, and 5-4 leads, the Heat defence couldnโt keep the puck out of their net. Spencer Foo had a 2 goal, 3 point night, while Glenn Gawdin recorded his first pro goal. Andrew OโBrien and Morgan Klimchuk also scored in the loss. Jon Gillies made 29 saves on 35 shots.
