When the Calgary Flames invited Glenn Gawdin to their development camp last year, it was an afterthought, but he turned heads of fans and Flames brass during the camp and turned it into a contract in November.
Gawdin then went on to post his best year in the WHL with 125 points in 67 regular season games. Gawdinโs 56 goals were a whopping 30 more than he put up in 2016-17. In the playoffs, Gawdin captained the Broncos to the Memorial Cup tournament, putting up 32 points in 24 games in the process.
Gawdin fought valiantly through a serious shoulder injury for the final two rounds of the WHL Playoffs and through the Memorial Cup enroute to being named WHL Playoff MVP.
Of course itโs very wise to be cautious with players who put up big numbers in their overage year. There should still be a lot of intrigue in Gawdin because going from 70 points in 66 games in 2016-17 to 157 points in 91 games in 2017-18. It feels like more should be responsible for that than just being one year older.
Gawdin should provide a nice boost to the Stockton Heat for the upcoming season, and could be a dark horse candidate to land a job in Calgary not too far down the road. The Flames signing Gawdin essentially covered some of the pick capital that they didnโt have in this past yearโs draft.
After accomplishing pretty much everything he could at the junior level, itโs time for Gawdin to turn pro, and Iโm very excited to see how he does.
