MarkParkinson14: (C) Was it Hamonic or Brodie? In the end it may have been a little of both. The Flames gave up a lot to get Hamonic and the initial return on their investment was, um, underwhelming as a whole. Hamonic played well in spurts, but there were also times when he and Brodie looked lost and they cost the Flames games this season. Hamonic posted a career low in goals (1) and assists (10) this season while playing in the most games in his career (74). All of that adds up to a “bleh” 2017-18 season, though his play on the blue line did improve as the season progressed.

MGMacGillivray: (C) Like Mark I also wonder whether it was Hamonic, Brodie, or even the coaching staff not being willing to adapt? Hamonic seemed to struggle early on but I thought he was the better of the pair later in the season. Now it’ll be up to the new bench boss to see if he can find the right chemistry on the back end.

MilhouseFirehouse: (C) The balloon burst on Travis Hamonic well before it had a chance to get close to the ceiling. However, I consider Hamonic a versatile, hard-nosed, hockey IQ’ed high-tier NHL defenseman who had a tough year in a new setup, who has spent way more time in his career being “good” than “bad”. (Unlike his partner TJ Brodie, who is starting to look like the total opposite). Like a lot of talent on the Flames, a fresh coaching perspective and a clean slate coupled with hopefully a collapse-preventing full year from Smith should hopefully bode positive for Hamonic moving forward.
