International Inferno Flare Found Four Games In China!

on

Welcome to Inferno Alphabet Soup, a acronym analysis for the Canadian Womenโ€™s Hockey Leagueโ€™s Calgary Inferno!

This week we take a combined look at Weeks 10 and 11, as the Inferno took a ten-day tour overseas for clashes with the Vanke Rays and Kunlun Red Star in Shenzen, China!

I- INTERNATIONAL!

The Inferno hit the airways, stopping in Vancouver for a layover before flying over the mighty Pacific to China.

N- NETMINDERS

Travel might have been a factor, but for the overseas seriesโ€™ the Inferno temporarily went against their three-goalie platoon system, having two goaltenders split starts in the four games. Weโ€™ll see if Calgaryโ€™s third keeper, Toni Ross, gets back in action once the Ladies In Red get back Alberta Bound! Herโ€™s how the starts looked in Shenzen

Delayne Brian stopped 19 of 17 in win Game 1 against Vanke Rays

Lindsey Post 34 of 32 losing shootout in Game 2 against Vanke Rays

Delayne Brian stopped 19 of 17 in Game 1 win against Kunlun Red Star

Lindsey Post stopped 29 of 27 in Game 2 win against Kunlun Red Star

F- FU, PANDA KUNG

Speaking of Lindsey Post, she had a little fun with a Kung Fu Panda inspired mask when she suited up against Vanke Rays:

E- ESPO & IVA!

Inferno scoring leader Brittany Esposito shook off an early injury scare to get right back into the thick of her scoring ways. Her partner in crime Iva Gavroliva was right behind her, as they sit 12th and 15th in overall CWHL scoring respectively.

In game 1 against Vanke, Gavrilova notched 3 assists and a plus-4, while Esposito had 2 goals and an assist for a plus-4. In the two games against Kunlun, Espo added another pair of goals and Gavrilova racked up another 3 assists.

R- ROOKIE SENSATION

Goaltender Lindsey Post was voted the ADT Goaltender of the week for February 5th-11th. The polls are conducted on Twitter and theCWHL.com

This is Lindseyโ€™s third time this season being selected the honour, as she is making an impact in her rookie season. She currently ranks 3rd overall in CWHL GAA with 1.98, and is tied for second in league SV% with .922, which is good enough for first in SV% among the three goaltenders for the Inferno.

N- NOT WITHOUT A FIGHT

Calgary dropped a shootout loss 3-2 to the Red Star in Game 1 of the second series, continuing the trend of the Inferno pushing themselves to the brink if theyโ€™re going to lose. To date on the year, CGY has only dropped three games outside of extra time, with the other 4 losses coming in OT or a shootout.

O- ON TO THE NEXT

Back on Canadian soil, the Inferno will play host to the Boston Blades. CGYโ€™s annual You Can Play game goes February 24th at 5:00PM MST, and the series wraps Sunday afternoon in a 12:30 MST start. Both games are at the Winsport Olympic Grounds in Arena A. Keep it locked to Matchsticks & Gasoline for coverage!
